Efficient clamping of small wooden parts

New small-part clamping system for woodworking centres permits flexible clamping!

At the LIGNA 2007, the vacuum specialist J. Schmalz GmbH presents a new, modular small-part vacuum clamping system to the international public.

The highlights – your benefits:

  • Clamping of narrow, curved workpieces and of frame elements with complex shapes (small parts)
  • Short set-up times – high degree of flexibility thanks to quick and individual adjustment to the workpieces to be machined
  • Simple adaptation of the "suction pins" to the shape and size of the workpieces
  • High holding forces – the special friction coating permits machining with high transverse forces

With this system, it is now possible to machine even demanding wooden workpieces flexibly and rationally on woodworking centres with console tables (or with smooth or slotted tables)!

Construction and principle of operation of the new small-part clamping system

  • Base plate made of extruded aluminium section and equipped with so-called suction pins.
  • The aluminium base plates are ready for installation and are mounted as required on, for example, one or more consoles.
  • Depending on the shape and properties of the workpiece, the appropriate number of suction pins is activated. These pins are arranged in a matrix on the base plate and form a "vacuum carpet".
It is thus possible to clamp workpieces of almost any size and shape without having to manufacture and set up a new clamping jig for each different workpiece.
  • It is also possible to cut the base plate (standard dimensions 300 x 200 mm) to the desired size.
  • The individual suction pins are activated with a mechanism rather like that of a ball-point pen. In the idle state, the pins are flush with the surface of the base plate and the vacuum is switched off. Pressing a pin down causes it to rise above the surface and this opens the vacuum circuit to the pin.
  • Activation and deactivation of the suction pins can also be executed automatically with the spindle of the woodworking centre!

Innovative clamping system
The new small-pat vacuum clamping system is ideal for clamping narrow and/or curved workpieces.

Simple and effective:
The base plate of the new small-part clamping system can be equipped with a large number of suction pins, depending on the planned application. Each suction pin can be activated and deactivated by pressing it down, rather like a ball-point pen.

High holding forces
Depending on the area, a large number of suction pins can be activated, which means that relatively high holding forces can be achieved even on small clamping surfaces.
