Schmalz at The smarter E Europe: Clean handling of energy components

Schmalz knows which vacuum grippers securely grip battery, fuel and solar cells without leaving any traces. In addition to these handling solutions, the vacuum expert will also be showing stationary energy storage solutions from until May 11.13, 2022 at the Munich trade fair The smarter E Europe in Hall B2 at Stand B2.438.

Schmalz demonstrates redox flow battery stacks as electrochemical conversion units for energy storage in large-scale stationary batteries.

To ensure that solar modules, fuel cells and batteries function reliably, manufacturers must work precisely and cleanly. At The Smarter E Europe in Munich, J. Schmalz GmbH will be showing how they handle wafers, electrodes or pouch cells without imprints, particle residues or deformation. So far, Schmalz has presented its redox flow battery stacks for stationary energy storage there. However, because the importance of solar and fuel cell technology is increasingly growing, this year the expert for vacuum technology will also show its solutions for handling fuel and battery cells as well as vacuum technology for the solar industry. In this way, visitors to the parallel trade shows Intersolar Europe and ees Europe will also be informed.

The Schmalz booth can be found at the trade fair for batteries and energy storage systems (ees Europe), in the Fuel Cells/Hydrogen theme area. Here, a robot demonstrates an important process in the assembly of fuel cells: the stacking of MEA (membrane electrode assembly) and bipolar plates. In the process, the gripper precisely aligns the plates with each other without damaging their surfaces. Schmalz will also show grippers for the automated production of pouch cells and their assembly into battery modules, such as the individually configurable lightweight gripper SLG.

Solar on the upswing

"Due to the goals of the new German government to significantly expand photovoltaics, the solar industry is experiencing a real hype," explains Dr. Maik Fiedler, head of the Vacuum Automation and Handling business units. In addition to the Intersolar taking place at the same time, this is one more reason for the vacuum expert to show the product range for this industry. These include special wafer grippers that combine cycle times of less than one second with precise positioning. The contact surfaces made of the impression-free material PEEK reliably prevent texture damage and contamination of the wafers.
