Jochen Gunkel – Sales Engineer at Schmalz

Head of Sales Process International and Head of Regions

I joined Schmalz many years ago as a segment manager for the automotive division. I had been looking for a new challenge in an international, innovative and growing company. To familiarize myself with the Schmalz products and the sector, which was new to me, I received extensive on-boarding training in the different divisions. That also gave me the opportunity to get to know my new colleagues quickly.

The scope of tasks in my area of responsibility were based on all the activities that were relevant to the segment worldwide. The primary ones were product development and gathering market requirements. Sales support for our subsidiaries abroad and partners was also among my most important tasks. Furthermore, I was involved in Key Account Management and planning and implementing the segment strategy. A great deal of initiative was required to design and implement the respective activities. After an enjoyable period as a segment manager, I was offered a position as regional manager for Asia. Naturally, I said yes. I am now the head of Sales Process International as a whole and am responsible for all our foreign business.

Looking back, I have to say that starting off as a sales engineer was a great springboard for my career. I’m also thankful for the support I received from the management board.
