Vacuum Technology in Press Shops

In press shops, the individual metal sheets that will later be combined to make the car body are produced. The metal sheets are supplied in large rolls called coils. The cut metal blanks are then brought to the press lines and pressed into the appropriate shape at various pressing stations.

Schmalz products are used in this area to transport workpieces quickly and reliably between the individual steps in the process. Suction cups are generally used on the end-of-arm tooling to allow safe, precise handling, even on extremely oily surfaces and at high acceleration rates. Developed especially for the press shop sector, vacuum generators with automatic air-saving functions and intelligent additional functions such as condition monitoring or energy monitoring ensure efficiency, safety and reduced downtime.

End of Line, finished parts are removed from the production line. Vacuum lifters relieve the operator from the weight of the workpiece, thus enabling a high number of cycles.

Requirements for Vacuum Technology

Safety and transparent processes
Innovative vacuum generators offer the option of permanently monitoring the vacuum system. Intelligent condition monitoring functions allow operators to avoid unexpected downtime and ensure process reliability. Using IO-Link technology, Schmalz also offers the option of integrating the vacuum generators SXPi/SXMPi into the fieldbus level, making processes even more transparent while allowing remote maintenance and parameterization.

Highly dynamic processes
Increasingly demanding requirements for the speed of handling processes mean that vacuum generators must have higher suction rates. The compact ejectors SXPi/SXMPi feature an integrated air saving function for a significant reduction in energy consumption. Dynamic handling in press shops requires suction cups that can absorb high levels of shear force. Suction cups for the automotive industry have large, structured inner supports for safe, dynamic handling.

Resistance to dirt and oil
In order to fulfill increasingly demanding requirements of high speed handling processes, vacuum ejectors with higher suction volumes are needed. Suction cups from Schmalz are made of specially developed materials that are resistant to oils. The vacuum generators ensure safe, stable processes, even in heavily contaminated environments. Condition and energy monitoring functions of the vacuum generators SXPi/SXPi increase the system availability.

Maximum flexibility for complex workpiece contours
After pressing, some of the workpieces have extremely complex contours. In order to ensure safe handling, the suction cups must be highly adaptable. The suction cup SAXM with a flexible sealing lip has a high suction cup stroke to allow optimal adaptation to a wide variety of workpiece contours.

Temperature resistance during hot forming
Structural components such as A-pillars are heated during hot forming. After forming, the component with a temperature of up to 250°C is removed from the mold by suction cups. Schmalz offers suction cups made of HT2 material, which guarantees long-term temperature resistance to up to 250°C.

Ergonomic handling End of Line
In line with the press cycle, the finished parts have to be removed manually from the production line. The high number of cycles, the weight of the workpiece and the recurring movements strain the health of the worker. Vacuum tube lifters Jumbo relieve the operator from the weight of the workpiece and supports an ergonomic operation.
