J. Schmalz GmbH has received numerous awards in a variety of areas, extending from environmental protection to the company’s excellent working environment and its innovations. In addition to innovation prizes for its products, the company has also received awards for its innovative processes.
Top Innovator of the Volkswagen Logistics Day (2016)
Out of about 180 participants, Schmalz was appointed to a shortlist of the 20 best innovators by logistics experts from VW and the Institute for Production Management (IPM). The automotive company honored the vacuum specialist's forward-looking projects in manual handling.
Hermes Award: Top 5 (2016)
As one of only five companies, the company achieved a prestigious place on the list of nominees for the Hermes Award. Schmalz submitted a product innovation which creates completely new possibilities for automated handling processes: Users receive important data on their smartphone or tablet directly from the switch processor. The “Oscars for engineers” is one of the most important innovation prizes for the industry globally. The presentation of the nominated innovations took place at the opening ceremony of the Hanover trade show in the presence of Chancellor Angela Merkel and US President Barack Obama.
German CSR Prize (2016)
The vacuum specialist Schmalz was awarded with the German CSR Prize 2016 in April 2016. The prize is among the most renowned sustainability awards in Germany. The company was honored for its holistic approach to reducing the carbon footprint of vacuum technology products: for being a positive energy company with CO2‐neutral and resource-efficient production. Schmalz managed to triumph over the two other finalists, Deutsche Bahn AG and Migros-Genossenschaftsbund, in the category of “The Avoidance of CO2 as a contribution to climate protection.”
German Industry Innovation Award (2015)
The global market leader in vacuum technology received an award for the “Best Innovation System” at the renowned “Innovationspreis deutsche Industrie” (German industry innovation award). The award honors outstanding new developments and innovative organizational structures that ensure the competitiveness of the German economy on the international market in the long term. The fundamental processes, culture of innovation within the company and working environment at Schmalz impressed Prof. Thomas Bauernhansl and the jury. The award was originally established by the “Produktion” trade magazine.
Great Place to Work (2015)
Schmalz has been named as one of the best employers in Germany in the prestigious “Germany’s Best Employers 2015” competition, held by the Great Place to Work® Institute. Following successes in 2004, 2009 and 2012, this is the fourth time that Schmalz has received this accolade. In the rankings, Schmalz achieved an outstanding 13th position in the category for “Companies with 501 to 2000 employees A total of around 600 companies of varying sizes and from all sectors and regions took part in the current benchmark study for quality and appeal of the workplace environment, submitting themselves to an independent review by the Great Place to Work® Institute. This is the 13th time that the prestigious competition has been held.”

Baden-Württemberg Security Award (2015)
In March 2015, J. Schmalz GmbH was awarded with the Baden-Württemberg Security Award. The award was in recognition of its outstanding projects in relation to operational security. The introduction of a security management system (ISMS) has allowed the company to protect its expertise and knowledge from unauthorized access in an international environment. The award was presented by the Interior Ministry of Baden-Württemberg.
Axia Award (2014)
In 2014, J. Schmalz GmbH was presented with the prestigious Axia Award for sustainable company management for the second time following its award in 2010. Accounting and consulting firm Deloitte announced the competition for medium-sized companies from Baden-Württemberg with the slogan “Nachhaltig denken, erfolgreich lenken,” which translates as “Think sustainably, manage successfully.” The competition focused on the sustainable safeguarding of employees, shareholder structure, financing and brand image.
Green-Blue-Energy Factory (2014)
In 2014, the European Union introduced the joint GBE (Green-Blue-Energy) project for the first time, with participation from Italy, Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Bulgaria. This European project celebrates the use of renewable energy sources and exemplary processes and concepts for combined use of energy in companies. 13 companies in Germany received plaques to commemorate their commitment, including J. Schmalz GmbH. Furthermore, Schmalz was the only company in Germany to be selected as a DEMO GBE FACTORY, and is therefore considered a model of dedication to conserving resources by using renewable energies.
Climate Workshop 2.0 (2013)
J. Schmalz GmbH trainees were awarded for successfully discovering energy-saving potential in the company. “Climate Workshop 2.0” is a competition that encourages young trainees and students to engage with the topic of sustainability and environmental protection and aims to stoke their enthusiasm for the subject. The Schmalz apprentices focused on the issue of heat loss at truck dock doors in the incoming goods area in the production hall.
Great Place to Work (2012)
Schmalz is recognized as one of “Germany’s Best Employers” for the third time. This has been published in a ranking by the “Great Place to Work Institute Deutschland”. The company achieved an excellent position in the top 50 in the “Companies with 50 to 500 employees” category. This is the third time, after 2004 and 2009, that Schmalz has placed above-average in this competition.

Best Assembly Idea (2011)
The vacuum technology specialist J. Schmalz GmbH has been awarded with first prize for the “Best Assembly Idea 2011”. The award was given as part of the 23rd German Assembly Congress in Munich by the iwb (Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management) of the Technical University of Munich. The iwb conferred the prize to Schmalz for its “Pick-by-Shutter” assembly workstation, which is used to assemble vacuum generators from individual components. The workstation is equipped with small gates that open or close based on the product variant. This principle prevents the wrong components from being removed, reduces search times to a minimum.
VR Innovation Award (2010)
The Baden-Württemberg banking group “Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken” awards the VR Innovation Award to medium-sized companies. Schmalz received the main prize for developing a new gripper for the photovoltaic industry, the Schmalz wafer gripper (SWG). It enables cycle times of less than one second, handles the solar cells carefully without leaving “fingerprints,” and can be used in production under cleanroom conditions. This is the only way to make production cost-effective and future-proof.
Axia Award (2010)
Deloitte, the consulting and auditing company, has honored SMEs for sustainable and successful economic management for the last three years. Winners are honored with the prestigious Axia Award. The ancient Greek term “axia” means “value,” “ability” and “success,” and combines key aspects of the work and challenges of SMEs.

Excellent Knowledge Organisation (2009)
The “Fit für den Wissenswettbewerb” initiative (“Ready for the Knowledge Competition”) has awarded J. Schmalz GmbH the prize for exemplary knowledge management in small to medium-sized businesses. The prize was presented by Georg Bröhl, Assistant Secretary of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. The goal of the competition is to accomplish a lasting transfer of the tools and methods of knowledge management into the operations of small and medium-sized businesses by way of concrete examples.

365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas (2009)
J. Schmalz GmbH was named a Selected Landmark for 2009 for its ecological discovery trail. This prize is awarded once a year by the “Germany – Land of Ideas” initiative. An independent panel of judges picked the ecological discovery trail from more than 2,000 applications. Individual people and groups can register with Schmalz for a free tour, on which they receive information about environmental protection, regenerative energies and energy-saving measures based on concrete examples. Schmalz uses the ecological discovery trail to provide information about innovative concepts for environmentally-friendly practices.

Great Place to Work (2009)
The “Great Place to Work® Institute Deutschland” published the rankings for “Germany's Best Employers” of 2009. J. Schmalz GmbH, with its 451 employees located throughout Germany, earned an excellent ranking among the Top 50 in the category for “companies with 50-500 employees”. In the overall field of participants, and therefore in comparison to well-known “large companies with more than 5,000 employees” and companies with “501 to 5,000 employees”, the company in Glatten occupies a respectable position in the top 100. This is the second time since 2004 that Schmalz has achieved an above-average placing in the competition.

European Solar Prize (2007)
J. Schmalz GmbH has set itself the goal of making effective use of all regenerative energy sources available. In 2007, Schmalz managed to produce more energy from environmentally friendly sources than the company used. The 2007 European Solar Prize for owners or operators of systems for using renewable energies honored Schmalz’ progress towards becoming a “positive energy company”.

The Dr. Rudolf Eberle Prize (2006)
J. Schmalz GmbH entered the competition for the 2006 Dr. Rudolf Eberle Prize of the Award for Innovation from the State of Baden-Württemberg with the compact vacuum generator X-Pump. Schmalz made it to the final round, once again proving the company’s outstanding level of innovation.
The vacuum generator X-Pump is an integrated ejector system with all the relevant suction, blow-off and switching functions that allows significant reductions in the amount of expensive compressed air used for the highest suction capacities.
Ethics in Business (2005)
With this award, the panel of judges headed by Dr. Volker Hauff, Chairman of the German Council for Sustainable Development, honored both Schmalz’ exemplary social engagement, and its commitment to environmental protection. The judges emphasized how clearly Schmalz had proven that systematic management of environmental efforts and social responsibility is not only possible, but also an important factor in business success.
The vacuum technology specialist impressed the panel in all the categories and received the “German Prize for Business Ethics” in 2005.

Ecological Manager of the Year (2004)
Dr. Kurt Schmalz and Wolfgang Schmalz were named Ecological Managers of the Year for 2004. This prize was initiated and awarded by Capital magazine and the WWF Deutschland environmental organization. The prize for “ecological managers” is Germany’s highest national award for a business’ environmental protection efforts. Companies cannot apply for this prize; they must be nominated for it. In this case, the BDI (Federation of German Industries) nominated Dr. Kurt Schmalz and Wolfgang Schmalz for the prize.The “Ecological Manager 2004” prize honored J. Schmalz GmbH’s environmental protection initiative which is exemplary at all levels and virtually unique among medium-sized businesses in Germany.

Great Place to Work (2004)
The Great Place to Work® competition is the largest and most important prize – in German and internationally – to assess the quality and attractiveness of employers. The companies and their management are evaluated on the basis of employee surveys about trustworthiness, respect, fairness, pride and team orientation, as well as an additional culture audit with the Human Resources departments.
As a result of the excellent results Schmalz achieved in this competition run by the Capital business magazine, the company was qualified for the Great Place to Work Institute Europe’s “100 Best Workplaces in Europe” competition.
From almost 1000 participating companies, Schmalz was chosen as one of the top 100 employers in Europe! (The organization does not publish more precise information about the ranking.)
BDI Environmental Prize and Green Week Award (2004)
Schmalz received two awards at once for its commitment to environmental protection: in Germany, the environmental prize from the BDI, and at the European level, the Green Week Award.
Environmental prize for companies (2000)
In recognition of its exemplary efforts in environmental protection, Schmalz received the environmental prize for companies in Baden-Württemberg in the industrial category. This prize is awarded to businesses that make exemplary contributions to environmental protection and conservation.
