Frequently asked questions about NFC

What is NFC?

Near-field communication (NFC) describes a technology which can be used for contactless exchange of data over short distances. Two NFC-capable devices are connected via a point-to-point contact over a distance of 0 to 2 cm. This connection can be used to exchange data (such as process data and maintenance and service information) between the devices. This interface can be used for parameterization of the component as well.

Is data transmission and parameterization via NFC safe?

Above all, the direct association of the product to the user's smartphone due to the short transmission distance speaks in favor of using NFC. There is no risk of inadvertently configuring a neighboring device. NFC connects two devices over a short distance (0 to 2 cm). This means that the devices almost need to be touching. The NFC tags on Schmalz products are marked with a corresponding logo to indicate where the contact has to take place.

How is data displayed on the user's smartphone?

Once an intelligent field device has been connected with the user's smartphone, a web page opens. It contains a clear arrangement of all messages and process and device data.

Data can be evaluated even more conveniently using the Schmalz ControlRoom app. This app is available to users of Android devices at the Google Play store. This free app allows reading out data and messages from intelligent Schmalz components. Parameterizing components using a mobile terminal device requires installation of an extension to the app. This extension can be conveniently purchased from within the app.

Can a smart field device be parameterized via NFC?

Parameters can be set on the user's smartphone and transmitted to the Schmalz product via NFC. Parameterization requires the Schmalz ControlRoom app to be installed on the user's smartphone. Parameterizing components using a mobile terminal device requires installation of an extension to the app. This extension can be conveniently purchased from within the app. Customers can try out the extension for free for 30 days before purchasing it.

Which mobile devices support NFC?

NFC technology is currently available only on selected Android phones. Please check your smartphone's operating instructions to find out whether it is NFC-capable.

Is an internet connection required for transmitting the NFC data?

With the free Schmalz ControlRoom app, you can access messages and process and device data without an internet connection. Parameterization of Schmalz devices can also be performed without an internet connection.

What distinguishes NFC from other wireless technologies like Bluetooth and WLAN?

NFC has a significantly shorter operating range of just a few centimeters. Another distinguishing feature is the establishment of the connection: While for Bluetooth and WLAN the connection of two devices must be established manually by the user, for NFC the communication takes place automatically due to the physical proximity of the sender and receiver. Thanks to the short transmission paths, NFC allows for the direct and unique assignment of senders and recipients. There is no risk of incorrect parameterization from a neighboring device.

Which products are NFC-capable?

The following products are NFC-capable:
