On the way to climate neutrality

Sustainability was already a factor when the company was founded in 1910. If there hadn't been a hydroelectric plant in Glatten back then, the company would never have ended up where it is today. With regenerative energy sources, efficient use of materials and resources, and the clear dogma of avoiding CO2 emissions as best as possible, Schmalz has committed itself to sustainability out of conviction. Because climate protection is not a mandatory task, but a real competitive advantage.

We are our own power plant

Full power for a positive energy balance

At its headquarters in Glatten (Germany), Schmalz covers a large part of its energy needs from its own renewable sources. The goal is clear: as a positive-energy company, Schmalz in Glatten wants to generate more energy regeneratively with its own plants than is consumed in the company. The facilities required for this, such as wind turbines and photovoltaic collectors, have been continuously expanded for decades. Other locations such as Japan or the USA also rely on modern energy concepts in order to consume as few resources as possible.

Schmalz writes green figures

The energy not consumed by the company itself from its own facilities is fed into the public power grid. In this way, Schmalz avoids CO2 emissions that would otherwise be generated by conventional power generation.

The result: a big plus for the environment and a showcase for the manufacturing industry.

Less CO2 in the bag

Schmalz products have a significantly lower CO2-backpack than comparable products on the market. By using its own renewable energy sources and numerous energy-saving measures, Schmalz produces in a CO2-neutral manner. The company also designs its upstream and downstream processes to be as resource-friendly as possible - from development to recycling.

Schmalz Germany's CO2-balancing is based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol of the World Resources Institute and the standards of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Children build a home for wild bees

Sustainability is close to our hearts - and we are happy to pass that on. As part of the Sustainability Days 2022, Schmalz built an insect shelter with children from the surrounding elementary schools in cooperation with BUND Nordschwarzwald. After a descriptive lecture about the native world of wild bees, the children, with great commitment and under the guidance of the Schmalz sustainability team, made a colorful insect shelter out of tin cans and bamboo wood. After completion, the new "shelters for the bees" were placed on the Schmalz eco-trail.
