The VCBL-S6 vacuum blocks from Schmalz have significantly improved the processes at furniture manufacturer Müller Manufaktur.

Schmalz Vacuum Blocks Optimize CNC Machining

Müller Manufaktur is gradually replacing the original clamping equipment on its machines from Italian manufacturer SCM with the new Schmalz VCBL-S6 vacuum blocks. They not only reduce set-up times and are cheaper to purchase, but also offer higher holding forces.

The challenge

Müller uses modern CNC machining centers from the Italian manufacturer SCM, among others. The Morbidelli m200 is used to manufacture flat workpieces such as table tops or worktops in small quantities or one-off production. The machines can process the blanks from five sides. This involves high lateral forces, which the clamping system must clamp safely despite rough surfaces or curved contours. The furniture manufacturer was not entirely satisfied with the original vacuum blocks from SCM used previously. Although they are of comparable stability, it is very difficult to replace the sealing lip if it is damaged. Disassembly requires a lot of dexterity and the use of a slotted screwdriver with the risk of further damaging the suction cup. The carpenters also have to readjust the sealing lip several times to achieve a precise fit. In addition, the high cost of the original vacuum blocks was an issue for the carpenters. In view of these challenges, Müller decided to accept Schmalz's offer and test the newly developed VCBL-S6 type vacuum blocks.

The holding force is 20 percent higher compared to the SCM original, while the stability is comparable.

The solution from Schmalz

The Schmalz solution is a clamping system that has been specially developed for the consoles of SCM machines. The VCBL-S6 type vacuum block is characterized by a robust main body made of fibreglass-reinforced plastic, which carries the suction plate with membrane. This suction plate can either be attached directly or circuitried with an elevating suction cup. The suction cup is positioned easily and precisely during production in 15-degree increments using a clamping lever. A touch valve makes it possible to leave unused suction cups on the machine, which reduces set-up time. The membrane of the suction plate protects the vacuum block from the ingress of chips. The elastomer part of the suction plate provides optimum sealing and can be replaced quickly and without tools when worn. To avoid errors when ordering spare parts, the VCBL-S6 vacuum block is equipped with an NFC tag that allows all relevant product data to be called up directly via the Schmalz ControlRoom app on the user's smartphone. The vacuum blocks from Schmalz are impressive. Compared to the SCM original, the holding force is 20 percent higher with comparable stability. This results in shorter set-up times, as carpenters can quickly adjust the rotatable vacuum block and replace damaged suction plates easily and without tools. The high holding forces improve process reliability at high feed rates and cutting depths. In addition, the height tolerance with Schmalz is more dimensionally accurate compared to the original, which enables more precise production. The mixed operation between the SCM and Schmalz suction cups runs smoothly, which speaks in favor of a gradual changeover to the Schmalz solution. Since the pilot project at Müller Manufaktur, there has been regular contact with Schmalz and the cooperation is running smoothly. Schmalz always takes the varying workload of the joinery into account when scheduling, which Managing Director Markus Hermann emphasizes positively.

The suction cup can be fixed in the holder in 15-degree increments without tools using the orange clamping levers.
