IO-Link Wireless is becoming increasingly important as a key technology for Industry 4.0. Could you briefly explain what IO-Link Wireless is and what role it plays in modern automation?

IO-Link Wireless is the wireless extension of the globally established IO-Link standard, which enables communication between sensors, actuators and controllers in automation. The special feature is that data is transmitted without cables. This opens up completely new possibilities for flexible, mobile and dynamic applications.

In the context of Industry 4.0, the connected and digitized factory, real-time data and maximum adaptability are crucial. IO-Link Wireless seamlessly connects the physical world of machines with the digital control level – and thus creates the basis for intelligent, scalable and efficient production systems.

Schmalz promotes the motto "Unleash your systems". How is this reflected in your IO-Link Wireless solutions?

This motto sums up the core of our solution very well. With IO-Link Wireless, we enable maximum freedom of movement by eliminating disruptive cables. Especially in mobile and dynamic applications – such as robotics or rotating axes – this opens up entirely new degrees of freedom. As a result, systems can be operated more flexibly, efficiently, and with greater longevity.

What makes the IO-Link wireless solutions from Schmalz so special?

Schmalz is one of the few providers to embed IO-Link Wireless directly into the components – without any additional bridges or external modules. This direct integration significantly simplifies the design and operation of dynamic, mobile or difficult-to-access handling applications. Without additional components, we reduce installation effort, potential points of failure and space requirements. This makes the start of operations faster and maintenance more efficient.

What specific benefits does this offer your customers?

Our customers benefit from maximum freedom of movement for robots and automated systems – without any cables getting in the way. This enables flexible gripper changes, simple automation of mobile platforms and higher system availability. At the same time, they save time and costs during installation and maintenance.

How do you see the significance of IO-Link Wireless for the future of automation?

IO-Link Wireless is a key building block for digital transformation in industry. Wireless, standardized communication makes production systems smarter, more flexible and future-proof. Schmalz stands for practical innovations that actively shape change and provide real added value to our customers.
