Storage and Cleaning of Suction Cups

Cleaning notes for suction cups (based on DIN 7716)

Suction cups can be cleaned with soap, warm water and (eventually) a soft brush. Dry at room temperature. The use of a surface-active cleaning solvent (neutral pH-value) in combination with mechanical processing is the best solution to clean suction cups. We recommend the use of a soft brush or ultrasonic device to clean the surface of the suction cup. The dirt will be suspended by means of the tensides in the solvent. Connections of rubber parts and metal can be cleaned by using a mixture of ethanol and glycerine at a ratio of 10:1. After longer storage times (6-8 months) the suction cups can be cleaned with a soda bicarbonate solution (1,5 %). Keep in mind to rinse off residues of the solution with clear water. The following products should not be used for cleaning under any circumstances: pure glycerine or solvents such as trichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride or hydrocarbons. The use of vinegar-based cleaning products or sharp objects, metal brushes or abrasive paper is also prohibited.

Storage recommendations for suction cups (based on DIN 7716)

Suction cups have to be stored in a cool (0°C to +15°C, never more than 25°C ), dark, dry and weatherproof place free of dust as well as protected against ozone and air draught. Also ensure that they are not subject to mechanical forces. Exposure to ozone, light (particularly UV), heat, oxygen, moisture and mechanical stress can shorten the lifetime of suction cups.

To facilitate compliance with the foresaid storage notes please follow the storage instructions carefully:

  • Suction cups have to be stored in a closed container. After taking out partial quantities ensure that the container is relocked. The use of an air tight sealing PE-bag will have a supportive effect. Please keep in mind that suction cups made of Vulkollan VU1 are an exception to this, because any humidity inside the bag can cause a post hardening of the material. Corrective measures can be perforated bags or the use of drying agents.
  • Tension-free storing. Suction cups have to be stored without any tension on the cups, and free of mechanical stress. Mechanical stress can cause a deformation of the suction cup, especially suction cups with a thin sealing lip as well as suction cups with corrugations. Low boxes, appropriate stacking with low stacking heights and if necessary intermediate layers are recommended.
  • Suction cups made of Elastodur have to be packed without any pressure on the cup especially when resending it. We recommend the use of a small box.
  • Other substances such as solvents, fuels, lubricants, chemicals, acids, desinfecting agents etc. which are not 100% sealed must not to be stored in the same room as the suction cups.

In case of absolute compliance with the points mentioned above storage times for suction cups of 2 to 4 years (depending on the material) can be realized. Due to the versatile influence of the different ambient conditions the storage times cannot be guaranteed.
