FAQ - NFC

What is NFC?

Near field communication (NFC) is a technology for wireless data exchange over short distances. In this process, the Schmalz product acts as a passive transmitter. The data stored on the product can be read or written using an active transmitter (e.g. smartphone or tablet). NFC can be used, for example, to read out identification data, maintenance and service information of the Schmalz product or to set its parameters.

Is data transmission and parameterization via NFC safe?

Above all, the direct assignment of product to smartphone due to the short transmission path speaks for the use of NFC. There is no risk of incorrect parameterization of a neighboring device. NFC connects two devices only over a short distance (0 to 2 cm distance). The devices must therefore almost touch each other. To identify where the touch must take place, the NFC tags on the Schmalz products are marked with a corresponding logo.

How is the data displayed on the smartphone?

If data is only to be read out, it is sufficient to hold an NFC-capable mobile end device to the Schmalz product. If the Schmalz product is also to be parameterized, the "Schmalz ControlRoom" app for Android and iOS devices can be obtained free of charge from the corresponding app store.

Can the Schmalz product be parameterized via NFC?

If the "Schmalz ControlRoom" app is installed, the parameters to be transferred can be selected on the smartphone or tablet and transferred to the Schmalz product via NFC

Which mobile devices support NFC?

Today, an NFC interface is built into all commercially available Android and iOS smartphones. Tablet PCs and smartwatches are also able to transfer and exchange data via NCF.

Is an internet connection necessary for the transmission of the NFC data ?

If the Schmalz ControlRoom app is installed on the mobile end device, no Internet connection is required to read data from the Schmalz product or to parameterize it. An Internet connection is only required to access documents such as operating instructions or spare parts lists.

What distinguishes NFC from other wireless technologies such as Bluetooth or WIFI?

NFC has a much shorter range of a few centimeters. Another distinguishing feature is the way the connection is established: While with Bluetooth and WIFI the manufacture of the connection between two devices must be done manually by the user, with NFC the communication takes place automatically through the physical proximity of transmitter and receiver. Due to these short transmission paths, NFC enables direct and unambiguous assignment of transmitter and receiver. There is no risk of incorrect parameterization of a neighboring device.
