Schmalz Vacuum Area Gripper Automates Door Handling

The Swiss company RIWAG Türen AG has successfully established itself in the door industry. In order to increase the efficiency of its processes and increase the level of automation, the company has put a new spray coating system into operation. Vacuum technology from Schmalz plays a decisive wheel here: the FMP area gripping system ensures reliable handling of the doors and at the same time helps to reduce process costs.

Zákazník: RIWAG Türen AG

RIWAG was founded in 1943 as the Rickenbach and Wiget carpentry and initially began with veneer work. The breakthrough came in the 1970s with the manufacture of the first front door, which laid the foundation for the company's later success. The company has been run by the third generation of the family since 2014 and has continued to develop, including numerous additions to the product portfolio. Based in Arth in the canton of Schwyz, the company produces a wide range of doors, including outside and inside doors, wood and metal door fronts, fire, smoke and soundproof doors, as well as frames and glass partitions. RIWAG currently employs 75 employees and has more than 100 certifications for various degrees of protection such as fire protection and burglary protection.

Výzva

RIWAG tests and certifies the door systems according to various criteria, with central data provision in the work preparation department using RIWAG's own PPS system. The doors go through all production stages in a batch size 1 production process. The automation of the processes was necessary in order to cope with the large number of variants. There was a particular need for action when it came to sanding and painting the doors, as this step had previously been carried out manually by an external paint store. RIWAG commissioned the system builders R. Wick AG and Robert Bürkle GmbH to design a system to automate these steps. Schmalz received the order to supply the complete vacuum technology for the automated handling of the doors.

Schmalz achieved a precision landing with the project support. The system works smoothly and saves us time and money.

Řešení od společnosti Schmalz

Schmalz used FMP area grippers for the system. The FMP is a universal gripper that can handle workpieces safely and reliably regardless of size, geometry, material or surface. Compared to other grippers on the market, the FMP series generates an average 86 percent higher suction force. RIWAG uses two Schmalz gripper systems, each consisting of eight FMP grippers with valves and corresponding spring plungers: The doors are delivered on pallets and measured in the system. The gripping system then lifts them into the machine, where they are sanded, painted, dried, labeled and sorted. The second gripping system returns the doors to the pallets at the end of the line. Because RIWAG produces doors in many different variants with different dimensions, the vacuum technology also had to be designed to be particularly flexible: Instead of a few large suction points, many small ones work on the gripper. This enables the gripper to reliably grasp the different geometries. The valves only switch the vacuum as required at the required points. This makes the solution particularly energy-efficient. The doors are handled with absolute process reliability. Thanks to the structured processing of the workpieces, RIWAG was able to achieve a continuous weekly output and thus increase productivity. Thanks to the automation solution, the company now uses less solvent and paint. This leads to a reduction in process costs and a lower environmental impact. Everyone involved is very satisfied with the progress and the result of the project.
