Suction lifter
A suction lifter is a hand-guided load handling device that can safely grip, lift and move workpieces with the aid of a suction plate and generated vacuum.
Operation mode of a suction lifter
The operation mode of a suction lifter is based on the generation of vacuum between the suction plate and the workpiece surface. To do this, the suction lifter is placed on the smooth surface and the air is displaced from the gap until a sufficient vacuum level is reached.
With classic suction lifters, the vacuum is generated using a mechanical lever or pump mechanism on the device, while modern variants use an electrical vacuum generator with battery operation.
Battery-operated suction lifters monitor the vacuum using an integrated pressure sensor, while the software continuously adjusts and automatically re-suction if necessary. This ensures that the vacuum remains as constant as possible, even with slight leakage or slightly textured surfaces. The current vacuum is shown on the display. In addition, an LED ring provides information about the device status.
Various operating modes are available - for example for quick attachment and removal, energy-efficient holding or handling rough surfaces. This allows loads to be moved ergonomically and gently.
Areas of application for suction lifters
Suction lifters are used wherever flat, smooth or difficult-to-grip workpieces need to be moved safely, ergonomically and without damage. They support the precise positioning, lifting and transporting of components and materials in a wide variety of industrial environments.
These include workpieces made of materials such as glass, wood or metal, where reliable handling is particularly important.

Frequently asked questions
What is a suction lifter?
A suction lifter is a device for lifting loads using vacuum. It is a battery-powered tool specially designed for the safe and efficient lifting, carrying and installation of various materials without damaging them, like a handle for non-grippable surfaces.
How does a suction lifter work?
- The vacuum generator (pump or blower) in the device generates a vacuum in the system by extracting air.
- The difference to the ambient pressure presses the workpiece and the suction lifter against each other. This is colloquially referred to as "suction".
- An LED ring and a display provide information on the status of the device during the application.
Is a suction lifter the same as a vacuum lifter?
Schmalz uses the term suction lifter for hand-guided devices with a suction plate that grip workpieces using vacuum. A vacuum lifter, on the other hand, refers to a complete vacuum handling system with vacuum generator, control and suitable suction cups (flat or bellows suction cups). Both use vacuum for safe gripping of workpieces, but differ in their design and area of application.
